Hi guys,

You’ve already been visiting Grado for half a day and you’d like to see something a bit different.
I got something for you. Why not stage a prison break out of Grado and go visit the nearby island of Barbana (->map).
Come along with me, I am going to show you how.

First and foremost, you have to go to Molo di Grado near a street called Riva Sebastiano Scaramuzza (at n°6).
A boat company transport passengers between Grado and the island of Barbana.
A boat departs for Grado at least once every hour except between 12h00 and 14h00.

On the boat in Grado. We are on our way to Barbana.

The boat trip to Barbana last about 20/25 minutes.
The return ticket cost only 6€.
On your way there, you’ll be able to see and enjoy the Grado Lagoon.

15 min later. We can already see the island of Barbana in the distance.

One hour in Barbana is more than enough to see everything.
This island is the site of the Sanctuary of Barbana and is populated by a community of Franciscan monks.
In the middle of the island, you’ll see a big church with a huge green dome.

Ferryboat arriving in Barbana.
Giant cross on the island, not far from the ferryboat arrival point.

A mass is given in that church every hour.
If you wish, you can go to mass.

Inside the church called Santuaro di Barbana. It used to be an ancient shrine to the virgin Marie.

Not far from the church, there’s a little chapel with pictures of deceased monks who used to live in Barbana.
Go inside and take a look.

Inside the little chapel called Chapel of the apparition.
View of Santuario di Barbana and its bell tower from the chapel.

On the other side of the church, there is a Cafetaria and a restaurant called Al Pellegrino.
Go to the Cafetaria and have something to drink and eat while waiting for the next ferryboat to Grado.
Many local people from Grado actually go to Barbana to eat at the restaurant between 12h00 and 14h30.
You can do exactly the same and enjoy a good lunch in this cute little island.

Cafetaria near the church. The is also a restaurant next to it.
Having a coffee at the terrace of the cafetaria.

Before taking the boat back to Grado, make sure you walk all the way around the island to see all of it.

On the other end of the island.
These 2 local people came in Barbana with their small.
View of the church from the other side of the island, near the cafeteria.

My tips for Barbana :

1/ Go visit the church and the chapel.
2/ Go have something to eat and drink at the cafeteria.
3/ Go eat at the restaurant Al Pellegrino between 12h00 and 14h00.
4/ Walk along the water all the way around.
