Hi guys,
Once again, I am going to show you a little village in the Karst Region.
We are in Dutovlje (->map). The village is 313 meters above sea level.
About 700 people live in this village. It is located near the town of Sežana.
It is a nice place to stop to run errands, eat or have drink if you are visiting the region.
There a a lot of vineyards on the outskirts of the village.
If you like wine, you should be able to taste some local wines in this village
because there are a few wine cellars in and around Dutovlje where tourists can taste local wines.
For me, the first asset of this village is its Tourist Info Center (TIC).
It is open from Friday to Sunday and if you go there,
you’ll get a lot informations about what to see and to discover in the region.
The men and women working at the TIC of Dutovlje are very friendly and will be
glad to give you all the infos you need to know.
Behind the TIC house, there is a nice little garden called “Pepa’s Karst Garden“.
Do not hesitate to go see it. It cost only 1,50 € and the employee working for
the TIC will go with you and explain everything about the story of this garden.
You’ll see a shepherd’s hut (made of dry-stones), the facade of an old karst house
and typical plants that grow in the karst region.
This garden is the work of a famous landscaper (->Borut Benedejcic) who lives in this region.
He actually built this garden from scratch for an exposition in the United Kingdom in 2009
and even won a 1st price at the Hampton Court Palace Flower Show of 2009.
3 years later, in 2012, he won the 2nd price at the Chelsea Flower Show.
After that, this garden was dismantled and rebuilt here, in Dutovlje.
Next the the TIC, on the other side of the road, you’ll find a restaurant
called “Gostina Ukmar” and a butcher shop called “Mesnica Delikatesa“.
The restaurant is not a 3 stars restaurant.
They cook simple food but it is very correct and cheap.
You’ll eat well and the value for the money is very good.
The butcher shop next to the restaurant is fantastic.
The quality of the meat they sell is top notch.
I like to go there and buy meat because often find the quality of their meat much
better than the meat that we can get at the super markets.
Before leaving the village, walk a bit around the church and
try to taste or buy local wine in one of the wine cellars in the village.
My tips for Dutovlje:
1/ Go to the Tourist Info Center (TIC).
2/ Go see the Pepa’s Garden behind the TIC.
3/ Go eat or have a drink at Gostilna Ukmar.
4/ Taste or buy wine in one of the wine cellars.
5/ Go visit Sežana or Štanjel (10 min by car).
