Hello guys,

If you come visit this region of Slovenia one fine day,
I’d like to show you some of the restaurants and Cafés/bars that are worth going to.
The Karst Region or simply “Kras” (in Slovenian) is very rural.
Some of the restaurants here are called “Restaurant” or quite often “Gostilna“.
If you see a “Gostilna” sign in a village or a town, it means “Restaurant”. Remember that !

1/ Gostilna SKOK:

Without a doubt, one of the best place to eat in this region.
The food is excellent and the quality-price ratio is very good.
I think you’ll eat very well for 20€ to 30€.
The restaurant is situated in a little village called Štorje which is about 5 km away from Sežana.
The owners of that restaurant are very friendly and the interior decor is nice.
You can also eat outside behind the building when the weather is nice.
There is a pretty little backyard (useful when you have kids) with a good a view of the surrounding hills.
I really like this restaurant because they serve excellent food and it is not posh.

Gostilna “Skok“, in a village called Štorje.
Nice decor inside the restaurant.
Terrace in the backyard of the restaurant.
Home made raviolis with truffles -> It was exquisite !
This dish was also delicious.
“Meat lovers” will also find happiness in this restaurant. Let’s dig in!

2/ Grad Štanjel:

This restaurant is situated in a village called Štanjel.
This is one of the most beautiful villages in the region.
The restaurant is located inside the Štanjel Castle.
The food is pretty good there too. You’ll eat well for 20€ to 30€.
But, the good thing is that for this price …you’ll have a very good view of the village and the surrounding landscape.
You can also choose not eat and just have a drink inside or outside.
I recommend having a drink outside during the spring or the summer (-> very nice atmosphere).

View from the interior of the restaurant. We can see the surrounding landscape and the village from above.
View of the courtyard through the windows. It is a great place to have a drink during the spring & the summer.
That day, I went there to taste their “Saint Valentine Brunch“. The table was very nicely presented.
As a starter -> Local cold cuts with cheese and Pâté.  Very good !
Second course -> Pumpkin cream soup with seeds. Excellent!
Third course -> Home made gnocchi with Karst cheese fondue.
Dessert -> “Chocolate kiss of winter” (Chocolate mousse + crushed biscuit + raspberry coulis). All that for 25€ !

3/ Pri Brajdi:

This restaurant is situated in a village called Komen.
They cook simple food but it is good and not expensive at all.
You can order a Lunch (it is called “Kosilo” here) between 11h00 and 14h00 (monday to friday) for only 5,50 €.
For this small amount, you’ll get -> a main course + a salad or a dessert.
If you don’t choose the Kosilo menu or come for dinner, you’ll eat well for 8€ to 15€.
There is a very nice terrace with tables behind the building.
If you eat there, you’ll have a good view of the surrounding vineyards.
The name “Pri Brajdi” in the local dialect means “Near the vineyards“.

One of the room inside the restaurant.
Beautiful terrace behind the restaurant with a nice view of the surrounding vineyards.
Kosilo” menu of the day -> Pasulj (bean soup) & Sausage + Salad. It cost 5,50€ (only Monday to Friday).
Out of the menu -> Mixed meat with side dish + Orange Juice (only 12,40€).

4/ Okrepčevalnica Cerje:

This snack bar opened in June 2018 and it is a hit with locals.
It is located in Cerje, on the edge of the Karst Plateau, behind the stone tower monument (which also house a museum).
You can go there just to have a drink or to eat. I went to eat there a couple of time already.
For a snack bar, I was not expecting much but the food was actually pretty good. Nice surprise!
But above and beyond that my friends -> The view is fantastic.
If the weather is clear, you’ll have a wonderful view over the Valley of Vipava and the mountains.
The plateau is about 200 meters above sea level.
From the snack bar terrace, you’ll also see Šempeter, Nova Gorica and Gorizia.

Snack Bar “Okrepcevalnicacerje” behind the Cerje Monument.
Inside the snack bar with one of the 2 owners of the bar. Young, handsome and very friendly … Excellent guy !
Eating outside at terrace during the summer. Ready to dig in !
Eating inside during the winter. We ate all that + 2 drinks + bread + the dessert below (total price -> 24,80€)
Try this dessert called “Šmoren” (kind of a thick pancake) served with chocolate and vanilla ice cream. Delicious!
View of the Valley of Vipava from the terrace of the bar.

5/ Vesna:

This cake shop is situated in a village called “Lokev“, about 7 kilometers away from Sežana.
They make awesome cakes, pastries and biscuits. This place is also a Café.
You can go there to have a tea/coffee and also buy cakes.
The first time I went there (in the beginning of 2016), I was very impressed.
There cake are excellent and above all, they are not too sweet.
After more than 6 months living in this region, I failed to find a good cake shop … until I found this one.
A lot of locals go there and many Italians living near the border or in Lokev go there as well.
The cake shop is located only 1,5 km away from the Vilenica Cave and 5 km away from the Lipica Stud Farm.

Some of the many good cakes and pastries that they sell.
This pastry (made with walnuts) was the winner for me. All of their pastries are really tasty.

6/ Gostilna Ravbar:

This restaurant is located in a little village called Dol pri Vogljah, 7 km away from Sežana.
It is a hit with locals from Slovenia and Italians living near the border.
They cook excellent dishes that are all home made, even the desserts.
I’ve been there once recently for easter sunday and the food was fantastic.
The interior of the restaurant is nice and the staff is friendly.
You should eat very well there for 25€ to 40€.
