Hello my friend,

I am taking you with me to go see a beautiful lake in the upper Carniola region.
We are going on higher ground to see lake Bohing (->map).

Lake Bohinj, early in the morning.

The lake is located within the Bohinj valley in the Julian Alps.
It is part of the Triglav National Park, only national park in Slovenia
with Mont Triglaw (2864 meters high) standing in the middle of it.

For me, Lake Bohinj is the most beautiful lake in Slovenia.
Of course, some people would not agree with me and would say that the lake of Bled is more beautiful.
I won’t lie, Lake Bled is gorgeous …but Lake Bohinj is above and beyond.
The lake surface is 526 meters above sea level and it is surrounded by huge mountains.
Last but not least, there is less tourists visiting Lake Bohinj than Lake Bled.
There is simply no match. It is a great victory by knock out for Lake Bohinj.

The road from Bled leading to Bohinj is a dream road.
It is green all around. It will be hard not to look left and right most of the time.
Forrests, pastures, rivers and little villages with old traditional houses etc…
You will probably surprise yourself driving more slowly than usual … just to enjoy the moment.

I recommend you to go see Lake Bohinj early (before 9 A.M).
There’s a fantastic light in the early morning and there is almost nobody outside except early risers working out.

Walk on the bridge near the 14th century Church of Saint John The Baptist and its beautiful bell tower.
Stand in the middle of the bridge, listen and look around.
The sound of the waterway flowing downward towards the lake, the mountains, the lake.

View of the bridge and the Church of Saint John The Baptist.
Walking on the bridge.
View of the lake from the bridge.
View of Ribčev Laz from the bridge. It is a settlement near the lake consisting of hotels and holiday homes.

The lake is about 4,3 kilometers long and 1,2 kilometers wide.
People who like running/walking often start following the lake just over the bridge in Ribcev Laz
and start running/walking around the lake.
The path going around the lake is about 12 km long.

Do not hesitate do go under the bridge near the waterway flowing downward towards the lake.
The view of the lake from that angle is very nice.

View of lake Bohinj behind the bridge, next to the waterway.
View of the lake under the bridge.

If you have a car or a bike, go along the road 1 or 2 kilometers and go near the water.
You will probably see people rowing and kayaking early in the morning.
Stand near the water and look at those brave soldiers training and sweating hard to keep in shape.

Athletes kayaking in the middle of the lake.
They will paddle untill they reach the end of the lake in this magical landscape.

You want to see more ?
All right, I give you more.
Let’s continue driving towards the end of lake and follow the roadside signs indicating Slap Savica.
It is a huge waterfall that is 2 kilometers away from the lake.
When you’ll see a camp with houses/apartments for tourists, park your car nearby,
follow the signs and start walking towards the waterfall.

Before reaching the waterfall, you’ll have to pay a 3 € fee to be able the continue on the path leading to it.
I tell you right now that you will have to sweat quite a bit to get there.
There are hundreds of little steps to overcome untill you see Slap Savica.
But don’t be affraid, it is doable. Go slowly but surely and you’ll be fine.

Hiking trail leading to the waterfall.
View of the valley of Bohinj, near the waterfall.

After a 20/30 minutes (depending on how fast you walk, you’ll see it.
A huge, beautiful, powerful waterfall surrounded by hills and mountains.
The water gets out at the altitude of 836 meters. A new height my friends.
We are in another space, in another time, at the another plateau … this is the realm of beauty.

Waterfall “Slap Savica“.

You want more ?
Don’t worry, I still got a little something for you.
We are already quite high above sea level, but guess what ?
We can go even higher than that.

To do just that, let’s go back towards the lake and look for roadside signs indicating “Vogel“.
It is a 1922 meters high mountains in the Triglaw National Park.
Follow the signs untill you see the cable car that goes up to Vogel.
Park you car in one of the parking lots and go get a ticket to take the cable car.

Cable car to go up to Vogel, 1535 meters above sea level.

The return tickets coast 20 € but it is worth it. Believe me !
Next stop -> Vogel.
