Hi guys,

Let me show you  Opicina (->map),  a little town that is close from the Slovenian border and the city of Sežana.

Tramway of Opicina

With about 8000 inhabitants, this city at first sight does not seem very flashy. It is probably true.
But, there is a couple of things that are appealing to me when i think about Opicina.

The number one asset for Opicina, at least the one who makes it worthwhile to stop there, is the Tramway of Opicina.
Guys, i am not kidding. Many people living in the area go to visit Opicina just to take the Tram.
It may sound silly but it is not. The Tram of Opicina is actually one of the oldest Tram still in service in Europe.
It is more than 100 years old.

I live in Slovenia near the italian border.
I first took the Tramway of Opicina to go down to Trieste in 2015.
Uhhh boy,it really was a lot of fun.
I am an old school guy and that Tram is really “La crème de la crème” of old school Tram. Believe me !

Taking the Opicina Tram, all the way down to Trieste is really one of the must enjoyable and cheap thing to do.
On a sunny day, you will get to see Trieste from above with the adriactic sea and its incredible intense blue color.
The trip down to Trieste last about 20 minute.
This little trip down to trieste by Tram is very relaxing, almost poetic.

Sadly, there was a collision between 2 of the Trams in service back in summer 2016.
Since then, the tramway line has not re-opened yet.
The 2 damaged trams were supposed to be repaired in 2017 so the line coud re-open.
We are now in 2018 and the Tram has still not re-opened.
I don’t understand why it is taking so long.
It is a god damm shame!

Another highlight of the city is also the obelisk.
It is situated on higher ground near on the edge of a beautiful natural park.
From there, we have an incredible vew over the city of Trieste and its docks.

From there, you’ll be able to see the town of Trieste from above.
A pedestrian trail called “Napoleon’s road“starts there, cut through the park, all the way to the city of Prosecco.
It is about 5 kilometers long and it is a really nice.
A lot of locals go on a bike ride, jog or take a stroll on this trail.
You’ll see from above the docks of Trieste, “Barcola”, the victory lighthouse (“Faro della victoria”) and the sea.

My tips for Opicina:

1/ Take the Tramway (still out of oder in 2020).
2/ Go see the Obelisk.
3/ Walk along the Napoleon’s Road (park your car here)…
4/ … and walk along the road toward that location.

5/ Go visit Grotta Gigante (only 4 km away).
6/ Cross the slovenian border and visit Sežana.
