Hello guys,
Today, i am going to show you a little town in Slovenia called Sežana (->map).
About 5000 inhabitants live in this town.
In many countries, a town of 5000 inhabitants would not be qualified as a big city.
In this part of Slovenia, near Italy, a town of 5000 or 10,000 inhabitants is not unnoticed.
To me, the city in itself has not a lot to offer… but, there’s a lot to do nearby.
Many people actually go to Sežana to work because there are a lot of companies there.
I like to use this city as a hub, on my way to Ljublana or Italy.
Since the city is big enough, you’ll find all the public services that you might need.
You’ll find a post office, 3 gas stations, 4 super markets, Hotels, a bus station and a train station.
The city is also a great place to stop if you need a break to eat or just walk and relax after a long trip by car.
If you come from Italy and are going to Ljubljana or if you come from Ljublana and are going to Italy (or another city in the west of Slovenia)…
Sežana is a good place to stop.
There is a nice botanic garden that is open to visitors every day.
It as recently been renovated and the entrance is free of charge.
It is not very big, but it is a very nice place to walk and to relax.
There are many restaurants and bars in town.
I like to go eat at the restaurant of the Hotel Tabor.
Many people working in Sežana like to go there for lunch.
The menu for lunch is about 6 € (soup + main dish + salad/dessert).
For this tiny amount, the food is actually pretty good.
Hotel Tabor is just 60 m away from the Sežana train station and 100 m away from the the Sežana bus station.
For tourists, it is a perfect place to eat and drink while waiting for their next train to Ljublana.
The city has also a big cultural center called Kosovelov Dom (or Kosovel Cultural center).
In that building, you’ll be able to see films in their original version, art expositions and plays.
There is almost no big cinemas in this part of Slovenia. Take advantage of it !
If you like watching movies on the big screen, I recommend you to to the “Kosovelov Dom“.
6 km away Sežana, you’ll find the “Vilenica Cave“.
It is opened to visitor from April the 1st to October the 31st in the afternoon (sundays and holidays at 15h00 and 17h00).
I went there one time and I really recommend it.
Also nearby Sežana, you’ll find the town of “Lipica”.
It is a little paradise for those who love horses.
Many attractions for kids and adults such as horse riding, carriage ride, pony riding for kids and many more.
For those of you who like horses and have kids, I am pretty sure you should have a lot of fun in Lipica.
The only drawback maybe … it is not cheap (16 €), especially if you go with the kids.
If you’d like to go there, I recommend you to go visit Lipica Saturday or Sunday.
Many attractions (pony riding, carriage ride, shows …) are opened only during the week end.
Just so you know, “Lipica” and “Vilenica Cave” are just 4 km from one another.
You could actually visit both on sunday.
The city of Sežana is also surrounded by a huge forest.
You can walk there for hours and enjoy nature.
Not far from the Hospital of Sežana, you’ll find beautiful green spaces and paths leading to the forest.
If you have a bike, you’ll be able to discover many nice little cities in Village near “Sežana”.
I recommend you to go visit the little town of “Lokev” by bike.
The main road between “Sežana” and “Lokev” crosses the forest.
At the entrance of “Lokev”, in front of the firehouse, there’s an excellent Cake Shop named Vesna.
Just stop there and go inside to taste one of their cakes with a good cup of tea/coffee.
You won’t regret it. Believe me !
My tips for Sežana:
